CANDLE CARE

CANDLE CARE

Candle Care is very important!  Strangely enough I didn't know about any of this until I started making candles myself.  So to save you from the many candle mistakes, here's a list of CANDLE CARE and CANDLE SAFETY TIPS.

CANDLE TIPS

ALWAYS TRIM YOUR WICKS

Failure to trim your wick can give you soot, make your candle too hot so it breaks!  This is very dangerous.  This also ensures a longer burning time. Always keep them at 1/4 inch and trim before you light your candle.

KEEP YOUR CANDLE SOOT FREE

If your flame is too high your may soot a lot, so keep those wicks trimmed.  Soot is a normal by product of burning, however.  If you're seeing too much on your jar, it's probably time to trim your wick.

AVOID TUNNELING

When you do decide to burn your candle you want to get a full melt pool.  This means you want all the top layer of wax to be melted before you turn it off.  This will help avoid tunneling.  The general rule it to burn at least one inch per hour, but never more than 4 hours at a time.

I WANT TO SMELL IT MORE

While I don't make my candles overly scented, if you want a stronger scent keep it in a small space or use multiple candles.  A good rule of thumb is one candle per small bathroom.  That being said, as a migraine sufferer, be mindful at parties and when guests are over that no matter how natural or non toxic a fragrance may be, it can trigger migraines for many people.  Keeping scents not as strong in those situations is always best.

I'M SCARED OF STARTING A FIRE CAN I USE A CANDLE WARMING INSTEAD?

Yes!  You may place the candle on a wax warmer rather than light the wick.  This is fine.  But burn time still matters as not to super heat the vessel and cause it to break.

HOW LONG MAY I BURN THE CANDLE

The general rule it to burn at least one inch per hour, but never more than 4 hours at a time.  And never burn the last inch of wax in your candle vessel!  Burning a candle down may super heat the vessel and cause a fire, breaking, etc.

ALWAYS BURNG YOUR CANDLE IN SIGHT

It can be tempting to burn your candle out of sight, but a draft might come in and cause the fire to burn too hot or move the wick.  A pet or child may also get ahold of the candle.  Burning out of sight might make you more likely to forget about the candle and let it burn too long.  Setting an alarm to check on your candle is always a good practice even if it is within sight.

PREVENT A FIRE OR PERSONAL INJURY

Never burn around children or pets or anything that may catch fire.  Make sure the surface is heat resistant and in best cases heat proof.  Wood, plastic, or other heat sensitive surfaces should have a heat proof candle coaster under to protect the surface.  Keep candles away from drafts.

KEEP YOUR WICK CENTERED

In the event of a draft or movement the wick may move.  Please reposition your wick to the center (or where the wick was originally located) of your candle away from the sides.  Failure to do so may result in the vessel super heating and the candle breaking.

HERBS AND STONES NEAR WICK

Manifestation candles do not need the herbs and/or stones to be inside the candle when burning.  You may remove these items and place them around your candle or in a bowl next to your candle when burning.  If you choose to leave them inside, you do so at your own risk and should make every effort to keep items away from the wick or from catching fire.  Manifestation candles also need not be burned to completion to work.  This is all about intention.
